My oldest daughter suffered from constant ear infections, sinus infections, strep throat, etc. I value doctors and their expertise but was frustrated by their recommendations on how to help her. Giving her a Claritin every day and Sudafed regularly was not helping and did not sit well with me. I wanted to know the reason for the constant infections, the underlying health issues that we couldn't see, and how I could help her without using daily medication.
I began my journey to homeopathic options with essential oils. I still use oils daily and with proper knowledge of herbs and plants, essential oils can improve your healing, mood and overall health. Essential oils helped my daughter when she was in pain, congested, and sick. Essential oils also helped me with sleep, stress and lifelong digestive issues. (Please click on the essential oils tab to learn what oils I use and when.)
Finding something that worked other than traditional medicine led me to want to know more; more about inflammation, more about the consequences of the food I was eating, more about natural options for helping myself and my family.
I discovered the ancient art of healing Ayurveda in 2018. I learned of Ayurveda from my friend, Martha. She gave me a book by Dr Vasant Lad, "Ayurveda- The Science of Self-Healing " and I began to change my life. I had been taking Pepcid regularly after dinner, Excedrin most afternoons to help with energy and a regular headache, anything to sleep, Claritin for seasonal allergies, Motrin for PMS, wine after a long day caring for three children, and on and on. On the outside, I looked healthy, happy and busy. I was considered very healthy by every physician I consulted. I cook at home most days, rarely eat fried or fast food, limit dairy, eat lots of fruit and veggies (mostly organic). Yet, I was exhausted. Everyday felt like a battle to stay awake, energetic and present. It was a balance of caffeine, water, and wine... Everyone I talked to said "well, of course you're tired, you have three kids". But I knew there had to be another way, a healthier way. Having a headache every day and living off over the counter medicine was not "healthy". Dr Lad's book confirmed to me that there was a different way to look at health.
I began by reading books on holistic health, nutrition and Ayurveda. These books led to more books and online courses. In 2019, I traveled to New Mexico for a seminar Nutrition is Consciousness with Dr Vasant Lad and to the Himalayan Institute in Pensylvannia for Restoring Your Ojas, a mediation seminar. I was very excited to continue my in-person learning but Covid derailed that plan. So I took 2021 to earn my Perfect Health Ayurvedic Lifestyle teaching certification from the Deepak Chopra Center. I have been able to continue my education with more courses through Dr Lad and the Ayurvedic Institute and AyurPrana. While my focus is nutrition and daily routine, yoga and meditation play a vital role in the mind, body, spirit balance that is the core of Ayurveda.
Discovering and implementing these principles has changed me physically and mentally. I no longer take over the-counter medicine and rarely give it to my children. My increased energy level and patience has been the most surprising benefit. Discovering what is healthy for you and how to feel your best is attainable, I would love to teach you what I've learned.
